“Within 25 years I make a vaccine for drug abuse, I have never seen such a strong immune response to vaccines that have anti-heroin,” said principal investigator Kim D Janda of The Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at Scripps Research, was quoted as saying ScienceDaily, Monday (25/07/2011).
Janda tells us the vaccine is highly effective and is expected to be one therapeutic option in helping people who are trying regardless of heroin addiction. Now the efforts of researchers over the last four decades to create a vaccine could be regarded heroin nearing success. It needs a long time because heroin is an elusive target metabolism.
In this new study, researchers from the Scripps Research team uses a dynamic approach that not only target the heroin itself, but also other chemicals that are degraded to 6-acetylmorphine (6am) and morphine. “Heroin is lipophilic and rapidly degraded into 6-acetylmorphine (6am). Both are easy to cross the blood-brain barrier so that it can reach the opiod receptors in the brain,” said Neil G Stowe.
The vaccine is highly specific heroin that means only generating an antibody response against heroin and 6-acetylmorphine, and not to other opioid drugs such as oxycodone, methadone, naltrexone and nalakson. “This is important because it means an anti-heroin vaccine could be used in combination with other rehabilitation therapy,” Janda said.
